WALLPAPER FEATURES Sebastian Irarrazaval Architects AS ONE OF THE 101 WORLD`S MOST EXCITING NEW ARCHITECTS
Irarrazaval's travel and university work provides an important source of inspiration, as does the places he works in, such as a hotel project in Patagonia. Classic names appear in his list of architectural heroes; he admires Mies van der Rohe for his free plans, Frank Lloyd Wright for his capacity to create places, Paul Rudolph for his cubic volumes' plasticity and Carlos Raul Villanueva for his ability to creatively use light and shadow.
Irarrazaval believes strongly in working creatively with what already exists rather than struggling to invent something new. He also tries to combine theory and practice and enjoys organising his projects around the idea of circulation, as he feels that movement is central to the experience of space. The density of architectural elements - ramps, columns, staircases and skylights - is also vital, for example, in his Pedro Lira House project. He treats every commission as a challenge and opportunity for architectural exploration". (quoted from wallpaper 101 issue)
